Craigslist Deploys Phone Verification

Craigslist.org

In early March of 2008, Craigslist implemented a phone verification system for their “erotic services” category and has effectively reduced the volume of ads in this category by 80%, and more importantly has signficantly improved compliance with their terms of use and other posted guidelines.

Here is a graph of the daily volume of “erotic services” ads submitted to Craigslist’s Hartford, Connecticut site:

Craigslist has had problems with misuse of its service for unlawful purposes and was seeking a way to eliminate it, while preserving full functionality for the overwhelming majority of well-intentioned law abiding craigslist users, including those who use their “erotic services” category.

I’m shifting my online “service” ads to other sites that do not give so much hassle. I like http://www.veroticguide.com and http://www.uros.com.
