Real Estate Industry Continues To Move Online

If there were still any questions about how the Internet is changing the real estate industry, a couple new studies have answered them.  The Internet has undeniably changed the way that home buyers are looking for houses and in turn how real estate agents are marketing them.

According to The Pew Internet & American Life Project study, over 50% of potential home buyers searched the web sites of real estate agents, searched online for information about the quality of life in the community they were interested in, and took virtual tours of houses and neighborhoods while searching for their next home.  These numbers can only be expected to climb as people become more aware of the options for home shopping online and as more and more agents adopt the practice of marketing their listings on the Internet.

As for the selling side of real estate, the changes that the Internet has brought on have not come without challenges for agents.  The learning curve has slowed many agents from taking advantage of the changes in the industry.  And in a survey by VHT, a real estate software company, Agents also reported challenges in managing their new Internet marketing campaigns and specifically mentioned tracking results, managing multiple online marketing points, and inputting listing information into various media services as things they found most difficult.  The survey also showed that the amount an agent is willing to spend to advertise each listing varied anywhere from $250 to over $1000.  This, of course depended on the value of the listing.  Interestingly, the experience of the agent determined their online marketing.  The more experienced the agent, the more they would integrate online advertising into their marketing plan for their listings.

This should serve as a wake up call to real estate agents that have yet to get themselves and their listings online.  The real estate industry is continuing to make the move to the Internet and success will be for those that embrace that change and move right along with it.
